This post is about the text from: Félix Candela. In memorian (1910-1997). From thin concrete shells to the 21st century’s lightweight structures, P. Cassinello(*), M. Schlaich, J.A. Torroja, http://informesdelaconstruccion.revistas.csic.es/index.php/in formesdelaconstruccion/article/view/1033/1119
Félix Candela was very interested in the use of engineering and structure in architecture and many of his most famous works use hyperbolic paraboloids to create the artistic shapes which he had designed.
Candela reimagined the use of concrete from a heavy and bulky material to a thin and artistic one which I think is inspirational because before he changed peoples perceptions it was never used in this way before. I have never really used concrete as a feature in my designs, apart from as foundations, however after reading this I can see that there are more possibilities for its use than as a boring grey structure which is dense and harmful to the environment, I can see that it can also be used to create sculpture like forms which are very beautiful.
