The site is quite open, next to a large park on the west side, which means that it will
be open to the south westerly wind all the time; however this means that I can make
use of the opportunity for natural ventilation if the building is less than 12m wide
(this is the depth of the building on the site nest to it). I would have liked to have been
able to make more use of the canal, however, I think that I will be able to use the park
which is directly next to the west of my site.
I chose to use the north of the site as my typology is a fashion and textiles school, I
feel like I would need more north facing classrooms and workshops to prevent the
glare from the sun; if they are on the north side of the site they will not be looking
into people’s gardens. The buildings along the south of the perimeter block are only 2
storeys ad so shouldn’t block too much of the winter sun, which is lower than in the
summer.
The site is well connected to the city with good footpaths and car routes to and from.
Unfortunately there is not a Nottingham City Transport bus (the main network in the
city) which runs along Castle Boulevard, so the nearest stop on this network is in Lenton,
a couple of minutes walk away. This would be an important link for both pupils
and staff as not all of the pupils will be old enough to drive and there may be limited
parking for them and some of the staff may not drive.
