This post comes from: “The diversity of timber in Alvar Aalto's architecture: forests, shelter and safety”, by Teija Isohauta [electronic resource]
The use of timber is an integral part of Scandinavian design, and so plays a large role in the work of Aalto. He is also influenced by history, due to many of his early projects being renovations of existing buildings. This can be seen in the timber arches of many of his subsequent buildings.
Throughout my projects, I have used timber for structure and cladding, however, I have never used it in as decorative and innovative ways as Aalto and I think that this reading has inspired me to be more creative with my use of timber, for example, using it structurally as a decorative element such as an overhang to provide shade from the sun and protection from the wind and rain. I think that timber is such a versatile product that I should experiment with it more and be more creative with my uses for it.
